Pre-Surgery Guide

Step 1

Your medications before surgery

All patients begin this regimen before surgery unless exempt or allergic to a prescribed medication. Your prescriptions are called in to your pharmacy three (3) days before your appointment — call the office if you need different arrangements.

Swelling & bruising

Medrol Dose Pack

Methylprednisolone — helps suppress bruising and swelling.

  • Start 3 days before surgery with the loading dose (lower right of the packet).
  • Follow the directions under each row until the pack is finished (6 days).
  • Morning of surgery: do NOT take it. Resume that evening around dinner time, then at that same time each remaining day.
Infection prevention

Amoxicillin 500 mg

A different antibiotic is prescribed if you’re allergic.

  • Start 3 days before surgery: one capsule three times a day, through the night before.
  • Morning of surgery: do NOT take any.
  • Resume the remaining capsules after surgery until finished.
Relaxation

Diazepam 10 mg (Valium)

Helps you relax before your procedure.

  • Take one tablet ONE (1) HOUR before surgery.
  • Because of this — and your sedation — your escort must already be with you. Do not drive yourself.

The morning of surgery — the simple rule

  • Skip the medications we prescribed for surgery (Medrol, amoxicillin) that morning — they resume as directed above.
  • Your diazepam is the exception: one tablet, one hour before surgery.
  • Keep taking your regular morning medications from your other doctors as you normally would — unless a medication interacts with your procedure, which we would have discussed with you beforehand.

Please note: routine dental implants are not a Medicaid or Medicare benefit and are primarily paid out-of-pocket or through third-party financing. If you have a credit score below 650, no co-signer, and require financing, we likely cannot help. Tooth loss with a medical cause may be different — see our medical insurance page.
